Read to Someone

We have been learning how to do Read to Someone.  Here are some examples of our practice time.
This is a group of three reading together.
Maddie and Brody sit elbow to elbow knee to knee (EEKK).
One person reads an open page and then ...
...says "Check for understanding."  Their partner retells what they heard.
If they get stuck on a word, the partner gives time and asks if they need help.
Then the other partner gets a chance to read.  Read to Someone helps kids gain confidence, grow in fluency, and have fun reading!

ODC Trip

We were able to go and explore the ODC in search of signs of fall.  Here's a little glimpse of our trip...it was rainy so I did my best taking pictures!
Mr. Jamie from the ODC gave us instructions for the day!
Here are the other leaders.  Each class had their own leader.

Our leader was Mrs. Jennifer.  She started by giving some directions.  Then, we were off to the meadow!

Walking through the meadow.  We talked about the habitat in fall.

We found a bird nest, but no birds today!

The meadow has really tall grass and only a few trees.

We learned about golden rod and other plants.

Mrs. Breuker and her group were learning from Mrs. Jennifer!

Mrs. Bushee and her group were learning a lot too!  And, looking cute with their umbrellas!

We went into the meadow grasses!  WOW!  What was fun!

The kids mentioned it was tall, muddy, and there were holes in the ground and tracks too!

Alex was getting enjoying the walk!

This golden rod has a gall on it!  An insect made it's winter home on the plant and will come out in the spring.

This tree was fuzzy!  We really had to use our senses on this trip!

This is a better picture of the gall.

Collin checked out the fuzzy tree!

We were listening and noticed some birds chirping!

Owen found a plant and another gall!

Carter and his friends walking through the paths!

We had fun at the meadow, but then we headed down the path to the pond.

We looked into the pond for signs of animals or plants.  We used our senses to observe!

We found a different kind of gall in these plants!  It has a different name too, but I couldn't remember that.  Do you?

In case you didn't see it in the last picture, I had Carter point to it.
Then, we checked out the wetlands habitat.  There were lots of tracks there!

Umbrellas were much needed, but fun to put down once in a while too!  The mud puddles came up next so the camera went away for a little while.  Then, I brought it back out for the forest/woods habitat.

We explored within the forest and noticed lots of prickers!

Reese was great at finding his way through the woods!

This is a birch tree.  The kids noticed the different trees and Mrs. Jennifer showed them some differences.

There were small crab apples growing that we picked.

Matthew is showing his!

Maddie was trying to see inside it!

Look at the bark on this tree!  It's a sassafras tree!

The bark on the cherry tree was crunchy and curled up!

We touched the different evergreen trees.  This is a spruce.

This was a pine tree.  We noticed it was softer than the spruce!

We found a bug in a milkweed pod.

Holding the bug was a LOT of fun!  We had to take turns!

Then, it was back to see the elk in their pen.  They had all they needed to survive!

The last place we went was the pavilion to explore different seeds and plants.  There were some on a table that Mrs. Jennifer let us touch and taught us about too!

WOW!  We learned a lot on our trip!  The rain did not stop us and we were tired when we got back to school!  Thanks to all of the volunteers who came along on the trip and to the staff at the ODC!  We are so glad you are experts!
